""Inside the elevator, now!"" Victor barked, his voice dropping into the battle-hardened timber of a commander under siege.
Julian saw his opening. He lunged toward the dropped duffel bag lying near the cleaning rack, his fingers brushing the strap before Victor's heavy heel came down across his wrist. Julian cried out in pain as the patriarch twisted his boot, pinning the traitor to the floor.
""You thought you were negotiating with amateurs, Julian?"" Victor whispered, looking down at his son-in-law without a trace of mercy. ""Those aren't your buyers coming to rescue you. Those are the scavengers you invited to my house.""

From the arriving sedans, four masked men emerged, submachine guns leveled at the center of the garage. Eleanor let out a shrill scream, abandoning her son entirely as she scrambled toward the service stairs. But the lead gunman didn’t aim at Victor. He aimed straight at the elevator doors where Clara stood clutching her daughter.
A burst of gunfire splintered the concrete pillar next to Clara’s head, showering her hair in white dust.
