Chapter 5 - The Severed Line

""What did you do?"" Victor’s voice dropped below a whisper, vibrating with a rage that made Marcus’s flanking mercenaries tense up.
""She is about to enter labor under our supervision,"" Marcus replied smoothly, checking his watch. ""The child will be born in our care. Under the legal covenants you drafted forty years ago, Victor, a surviving grandchild registered under the Ravenwood ward system inherits control if the direct heir is incapacitated.""
""Clara will die before she gives you that child,"" Victor stated with utter certainty.
""She won't have a choice,"" Marcus sneered, gesturing toward his men. ""Kill the old man. Make it look like Julian's botched robbery.""
Two gunmen raised their weapons, but Victor didn't wait. He drove his shoulder straight into Marcus's chest, taking the leader down with ruthless, experienced force. A barrage of deafening gunfire tore through the air, but the bullets struck empty concrete—Victor had rolled behind the armored fender of Julian’s abandoned Mercedes.

Victor reached into his inner pocket, not for a gun, but for a military-grade remote detonator. He had wired this underground bunker decades ago for this exact contingency.
With a hard press of his thumb, the overhead structural fire-suppression valves blew open, blasting blinding pressurized foam across the entire sector. Under the white cloud, Victor sprinted into the fire corridor, determined to hunt down his daughter.
