Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ascends

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel hummed with the quiet, nervous energy of the world’s most powerful financial magnates. Over five hundred delegates—banking CEOs, sovereign fund directors, foreign ministers—had gathered for the annual Atlantic Trade Summit.
For the past forty-eight hours, the financial world had been rocked by the sudden, violent erasure of Vance Maritime. Rumors spread like wildfire. Who had possessed the leverage to wipe out a three-billion-dollar empire in a single afternoon? Who was the mysterious shadow operating the Hawthorne accounts?
At precisely ten o'clock, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the auditorium parted.
Alexander Hawthorne walked down the center aisle, his presence commanding absolute silence. But he did not take the podium. Instead, he stepped to the side of the stage and extended his arm toward the entrance.
Walking in behind him was Emily.
She wore a bespoke emerald-green velvet dress, tailored with razor-sharp precision, adorned only with a single vintage diamond brooch that had belonged to the Romanov royal family. Her head was held high, her gaze sweeping across the room with an authority so commanding that several seasoned CEOs instinctively straightened their ties.
Murmurs rippled through the front rows.
""Is that... isn't that the Vance boy’s runaway bride?""
""The scholarship girl from the papers?""
Emily mounted the stage steps with effortless grace. She stood behind the podium, looking down at the sea of billionaires who had once laughed at Eleanor Vance’s cruel jokes about her modest background.
""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Emily’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art audio system, clear, melodic, and unyielding. ""I believe many of you were expecting Arthur Vance to present the new logistics framework for the eastern shipping lanes today.""
May you like
She paused, letting the silence settle like a blanket of fresh snow.
""Arthur Vance will not be joining us,"" she continued, a faint, razor-thin smile gracing her lips. ""Neither will his son. As of this morning, Hawthorne Logistics has absorbed all remaining maritime assets. The shipping lanes are open. But the terms of engagement... have fundamentally changed.""
