Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Glass

The penthouse suite at the top of Hawthorne Tower was silent. Emily sat by a roaring fireplace, wrapped in a heavy ivory knit sweater, staring into the flickering embers. On the table next to her lay an old, faded photograph—not of Julian, but of her mother, who had died when Emily was barely twelve years old. Her mother had possessed the same hazel eyes, the same quiet dignity, and had also suffered at the hands of elite society before Alexander Hawthorne had built his fortress around her.

The door to the private study opened, and Alexander Hawthorne stepped into the room.

At sixty-two, Alexander was still a towering figure, his silver hair cropped short, his face etched with the severe lines of a man who had won a thousand quiet wars. He wore no jewelry, no ostentatious trappings of power, only a simple dark suit.

He walked over and placed a warm, heavy hand on Emily’s shoulder.

""You did well today,"" Alexander said, his voice deep and rumbling. ""The Vance network has been completely dismantled. Arthur was arrested at Teterboro Airport an hour ago trying to board an unregistered Gulfstream. Eleanor is currently in custody at the 19th precinct.""

""And Julian?"" Emily asked without looking up.

""He is in protective custody under the U.S. Marshals,"" Alexander replied. ""He will testify next month. He will walk away without jail time, but he will walk away with nothing else. His name is toxic. No bank will touch him. No company will hire him. He will spend the rest of his days living in a rented studio apartment in Queens, surviving on a clerk’s wage.""

Emily closed her eyes, letting the heat of the fire wash over her tired face. ""Why does it still feel cold, Father?""

Alexander sat in the leather armchair opposite her, his gaze steady. ""Because you loved an illusion, Emily. The death of an illusion hurts just as much as the death of a reality. But pain is the only teacher that never lies to you.""

Emily took a slow, deep breath, feeling the last remnants of the naïve girl who had walked down that cathedral aisle evaporate into smoke.

""I am ready to take my seat on the Board, Father,"" she said, opening her eyes.

Alexander smiled—a rare, sharp expression of genuine pride. ""Good. Because tomorrow morning, the Atlantic Trade Summit convenes. And they are about to meet the new sovereign of the Eastern Seaboard.""
