Chapter 12 - The Poisoned Ledger

Emily stood in her private corner office on the top floor of Hawthorne Tower, reviewing the quarterly consolidation reports. The rain had cleared, leaving the Manhattan skyline glittering against a crisp twilight sky.
Henderson entered without knocking—a breach of etiquette that made Emily look up immediately. The elderly butler’s face was uncharacteristically tight, his jaw set in stone.
""What is it, Henderson?"" she asked.
""A formal injunction was just filed in the Southern District of New York,"" Henderson said, placing a courier envelope on her desk. ""Signed by Marcus Sterling on behalf of an entity calling itself the Orion Syndicate.""
Emily sliced open the envelope with a silver letter opener. As her eyes scanned the legal complaint, the blood drained from her face.
The documents contained birth certificates, DNA registry transcripts, and intimate, handwritten letters bearing her mother’s unmistakable, elegant script. The claim was simple and catastrophic: Emily was not the sole heir to the Hawthorne fortune. She had an older half-brother, born in secret in a Swiss clinic thirty-one years ago, whose existence had been erased from official civil registries.
""Is this real?"" Emily whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. ""Did my father know about this?""
""Lord Alexander did not know, Miss Emily,"" a voice spoke from the shadows near the office door.
Emily spun around. Standing in the threshold was not her father, but a tall, athletic man in his early thirties, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. He had striking gray eyes—the exact shade of her mother’s—and a scar cutting diagonally across his left cheekbone.

Behind him stood Marcus Sterling, and just beyond the doorframe, Julian Vance lurked like a hyena waiting for scraps.
""Hello, little sister,"" the man said, offering an effortless, mocking bow. ""My name is Dominic. And I believe you are sitting in my chair.""
