Chapter 2 - The Fall of the First Domino

The brass latch of the cathedral’s reinforced oak doors engaged with a resounding, metallic thud that rattled the stained-glass panes. A hush, thick and suffocating, descended upon the assembled crowd. Whispers died in throats as two dozen security guards—not the Vance family’s private contractors, but men wearing charcoal suits with discreet silver lapel pins—flanked the perimeter.

Julian took a hesitant step back toward the altar, his throat suddenly bone-dry. ""Emily?"" The mocking swagger had bled from his voice, replaced by an uneasy tremor. ""What is this nonsense? What deal?""

Eleanor Vance scoffed, stepping down from the altar platform, her diamond-encrusted bracelet clattering against her wrist. ""Julian, ignore this pathetic display. The girl is having a hysterical breakdown. Security! Remove her immediately. She has disgraced our name enough for one afternoon.""

None of the guards moved. In fact, the lead security officer took two paces forward and turned his back to Eleanor, facing outward with his hands resting calmly over his holster.

Mr. Henderson produced an encrypted satellite phone from his breast pocket. He pressed two keys and held the device to his ear. ""Sir,"" the butler said into the receiver, his tone measured and crisp. ""The young mistress has issued the termination order. Liquidate the Vance industrial consortium across all Asian and European exchanges. Freeze their credit facilities in Zurich immediately. Yes, sir. Commencing extraction.""

Eleanor’s face paled beneath her heavy foundation. ""Who do you think you are talking to, old man? My husband is Arthur Vance! We own half of the commercial shipping lanes on the eastern seaboard!""

Emily stood up. She did not stumble. She did not reach for Julian’s hand. With deliberate slowness, she raised her left hand, pinched the heavy platinum band of the diamond ring between two fingers, and slipped it off her finger. She let it drop. The heavy gem struck the marble with a dull, hollow click, rolling toward Julian’s feet before settling against the base of a floral urn.

""Your husband does not own those shipping lanes, Eleanor,"" Emily said, her tone conversational, almost polite. ""My family’s trust holds seventy percent of your parent company’s debt. My father let Arthur believe he was a partner because I foolishly believed Julian was a man of honor.""

Julian’s phone buzzed violently in his inner coat pocket. Then Eleanor’s phone chimed. Then, across the entire cathedral, the phones of the city’s most influential financiers, senators, and board members began vibrating in unison.

Julian fumbled for his device, pulling it out with trembling fingers. The screen flashed bright crimson with market alert notifications: Vance Maritime shares plummeting 84% in pre-market trading; Creditors call in $4.2 billion in immediate debt obligations.

Julian looked up, his jaw slack, terror turning his eyes bloodshot. ""Emily... what did you just do?""

Emily tilted her head, her veil draping over her shoulder like a shroud. ""I took off my gloves, Julian. And the bank is closing.""
