Chapter 3 - Smoke and Shrouds

Panic ruptured through the cathedral like an electric shock. The serene, sacred hall dissolved into chaotic shouting as hedge fund managers frantically dialed their brokers, trampling over white hydrangeas and silk ribbons in their rush to salvage their investments. Arthur Vance, Julian’s father, finally broke through the crowd, his silk tie loosened, his face the color of wet cement.
""Julian! Eleanor! What the hell is happening?"" Arthur bellowed, clutching his tablet screen where red graphs plummeted off the charts. ""The Vanguard group... the Swiss syndicates... they are executing margin calls on every asset we leverage! We’re ruined! In twelve minutes, we won’t have enough liquidity to pay the utility bills on the Vance Tower!""
Eleanor grabbed her husband’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging through his sleeve. ""It’s her, Arthur! The little scholarship charity case! She’s playing some cheap parlor trick with her hired actors!""
Emily ignored the screeching matriarch. Henderson stepped forward, opening a full-length black cashmere overcoat and draping it across Emily’s shoulders, completely concealing the delicate lace of her wedding dress. Behind him, four tactical agents formed a moving wedge, clearing a path through the aisle.
""Wait! Emily, wait!"" Julian lunged forward, his face contorted in a mix of fury and sickening realization. He reached out to grab her wrist, forgetting that this was the woman he had just abandoned on the floor moments earlier.
Before his fingers could graze her coat, the second elderly bodyguard, Mr. Miller, stepped into his path. With the fluidity of an apex martial artist concealed in a grandfatherly frame, Miller caught Julian’s wrist, applying precise, agonizing pressure against the radial nerve.
Julian gasped, dropping to his knees on the very spot where Emily had lain. Pain shot up his arm, blinding and pure.
""Mr. Vance,"" Miller murmured with terrifying calm, leaning down so only Julian could hear. ""If you attempt to touch Lady Emily again, I will remove your fingers one joint at a time, and your father will thank me for not taking the entire arm.""
Miller released him. Julian collapsed against the runner rug, gasping for air, clutching his throbbing wrist.
Emily paused right at the heavy double doors. She didn't look at Eleanor, whose mouth was opening and closing like a suffocating fish, nor Arthur, who was already on his knees begging a broker over the phone. Her eyes swept over Julian, sitting broken on the floor.

""You said I wasn't built for your family, Julian,"" Emily said softly, her voice carrying over the din of frantic phone calls. ""You were right. I was born to bury empires, not serve them.""
She stepped through the threshold into the blinding glare of the afternoon sun, where a convoy of armored black sedans waited with engines idling, leaving the doors to slam shut once more on the ruined remnants of the Vance lineage.
