Chapter 8 - The Judas Signature

The rain turned into a punishing sleet, pelting Julian’s face as he stared down at the damp manila folder resting in the oily runoff of the curb. Eleanor stared at her son, her pupils dilated with absolute horror.

""Julian, no!"" Eleanor screamed, grabbing his collar, her manicured fingers shaking violently. ""You wouldn't dare! We gave you everything! Your name, your status, your life! You cannot sign that!""

Julian looked at his mother. For twenty-eight years, he had lived under the shadow of her sharp tongue and suffocating expectations. He had watched her humiliate housekeepers, dismiss loyal staff without pay, and treat Emily like dirt on the sole of her shoe. But more than that, Julian recognized his own cowardice. He was not built for prison. He was built for silk sheets and private jets.

He slapped Eleanor’s hands away.

""You're the one who told me she was nobody!"" Julian roared, his voice cracking in the freezing rain. ""You're the one who insisted I humiliate her at the altar to show the board I was ruthless! You ruined us, Mother!""

""Julian, please!""

Julian fell to his stomach on the wet sidewalk. He ripped open the folder with shaking teeth and trembling fingers. He didn't even read the pages—pages detailing thirty years of systemic tax evasion, shell corporation bribery, and international money laundering orchestrated by Arthur and Eleanor Vance.

He pulled a gold Montblanc pen from his coat pocket, his family crest etched onto its cap. With ragged, panicked strokes, he signed his name on the line marked Cooperating Witness.

Inside the warm cabin of the Maybach, Emily watched through the rain-streaked window. There was no joy in her chest, only a deep, profound numbness. This was the man who had whispered poetry into her hair six months ago, who had sworn on his life that he would protect her from the world. When stripped of his wealth, he didn't even hesitate to feed his own mother to the wolves.

Mr. Henderson stepped out, retrieved the signed document from Julian's limp hands, and returned to the passenger seat.

""The signature is authenticated, Miss Hawthorne,"" Henderson reported quietly.

Julian looked up from the gutter, tears mixing with the freezing slush on his cheeks. ""I signed it, Emily! I gave you everything! Do I get to keep the trust fund? Can I keep the apartment in Miami?""

May you like

Emily rolled up the window without uttering a single word.

The heavy luxury sedan surged forward smoothly, splashing dirty street water across Julian’s chest and Eleanor’s legs as it merged into the Manhattan traffic, leaving mother and son to scream at each other on the cold concrete.
