Chapter 11 - The Serpent’s Final Strike

While Emily commanded the Plaza Hotel, sixty blocks south in Lower Manhattan, a private meeting was taking place in the basement of a discreet legal firm.

Julian Vance sat in a windowless conference room, wearing a cheap nylon jacket and faded jeans provided by the public defender's office. Across the metal table sat Marcus Sterling—the lead defense attorney for Eleanor Vance, and a man who had made his fortune defending the most ruthless corporate predators on Wall Street.

""Julian,"" Sterling whispered, leaning across the table, his eyes gleaming behind gold-rimmed glasses. ""Your mother isn't finished yet.""

Julian shook his head violently, clutching a paper cup of lukewarm instant coffee. ""No. No way. You didn't see Emily's eyes, Marcus. She isn't human. She destroyed my father in six hours. If I go against her again, I'll end up at the bottom of the Hudson.""

""Your father was weak,"" Sterling hissed, sliding a thin, encrypted thumb drive across the table. ""He kept financial records in standard databases. But your mother kept personal records. Private letters, medical files, and personal journals belonging to Emily’s late mother, Victoria Hawthorne.""

Julian froze, his hand trembling over the plastic coffee cup. ""What are you talking about?""

""Before Victoria married Alexander Hawthorne, she had a child out of wedlock,"" Sterling revealed in a low, poisonous whisper. ""A child who was given up for adoption in Europe thirty years ago. Under the bylaws of the Hawthorne Trust, if the sole heir is not the firstborn legitimate issue, the inheritance is contested. The trust can be frozen for a decade in probate court.""

Julian looked at the drive. A spark of his old, venomous ambition flickered in his chest. If the Hawthorne Trust was frozen, the debt covenants against the Vance estate would be temporarily nullified. He could reclaim his shares. He could reclaim his life.

""Who is the firstborn?"" Julian asked, his voice shaking with greed.

Sterling leaned in close. ""You're looking at his legal representative. And Julian... he wants his sister’s head on a silver platter.""
