Chapter 4 - The Iron Pavilion

The presidential suite of the St. Regis had been transformed into an operations theater. Bank monitors flickered against the mahogany walls, broadcasting live news feeds from Bloomberg, CNBC, and the Tokyo exchange. A soft rain began to patter against the panoramic windows overlooking Central Park, blurring the city lights into streaks of neon and gray.

Emily stood by the glass, having discarded the veil and the lace gown. She now wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, sleek bun. In her hand, she held a porcelain cup of black tea, untouched.

""The Asian markets have completely swallowed their maritime bonds, Miss Hawthorne,"" Henderson reported, setting a tablet on the glass table. ""Arthur Vance attempted to access the offshore reserves in the Cayman Islands thirty minutes ago. Our legal team intercepted the transfer. All four shell companies are frozen under anti-fraud provisions.""

""And Julian?"" Emily asked, her voice calm, devoid of the tremor that had shaken her at the altar.

""He is currently at the Vance residence, besieged by process servers and journalists. His personal accounts were suspended three minutes ago. He cannot even buy fuel for his sports car.""

A heavy silence settled in the room, broken only by the rhythmic hum of computer fans. Emily stared at her reflection in the darkened window. She saw the girl who had spent three years pretending to be simple, pretending to be ordinary, all because she had desperately wanted to be loved for herself, not for the colossal shadow cast by the Hawthorne industrial dynasty. Her father, Alexander Hawthorne, had warned her. A wolf does not seek warmth among sheep, Emily. They will smile at your gentle touch until they realize your teeth are sharper than theirs.

""My father called?"" she asked.

""Lord Alexander is on the encrypted transatlantic line,"" Henderson replied, handing her a silver handset. ""He is waiting.""

Emily took the receiver and pressed it to her ear. ""Father.""

A deep, gravelly voice, weathered by decades of cutthroat global diplomacy and unyielding dominance, resonated through the line. ""Did they break you, little sparrow?""

Emily looked down at her bare fingers, where the indentation of the heavy diamond ring still left a faint pale mark. ""No, Father. They just woke me up.""

A low chuckle came from the other end. ""Good. Because Arthur Vance just contacted my chief of staff. He has no idea you are my daughter. He thinks you are a front for a hostile corporate takeover by an anonymous syndicate. He is offering to surrender Julian’s voting shares in exchange for twenty-four hours of debt relief.""

Emily’s lips curled into a cold, merciless line. ""Accept the meeting, Father. Tell him to bring his golden boy. It’s time Julian learned the true cost of an unfinished wedding.""
