Chapter 15 - The Final Checkmate

The grand boardroom of the Manhattan Federal Court was sealed under maximum security. Judge Vance Sterling—Marcus Sterling’s uncle and a jurist long bought by shadow syndicates—sat at the head of the mahogany bench, ready to sign the provisional order freezing the Hawthorne Trust.

Dominic sat at the petitioner’s table, looking relaxed and triumphant. Julian sat two chairs down, chewing his fingernails nervously, watching the courtroom clock tick toward eight o'clock.

At precisely 7:59 AM, the heavy brass doors of the courtroom swung wide.

Emily entered alone.

She wore no jewelry, no makeup, only a sharp, black wool coat that fell to her ankles. She walked down the center aisle with the calm, measured stride of an empress entering an occupied province.

""You're late, Lady Emily,"" Judge Sterling said, adjusting his spectacles, a thin sneer on his lips. ""If you do not present counter-evidence to the petitioner’s claim of primary succession, I will execute the injunction and transfer temporary trusteeship to Mr. Dominic Vane.""

""There is no need for counter-evidence, Your Honor,"" Emily said, stopping at the podium in the center of the room.

Dominic chuckled, leaning back in his chair. ""Accepting defeat gracefully, sister? How unexpected.""

Emily turned her head slowly, looking directly into Dominic’s arrogant gray eyes.

""You have our mother’s eyes, Dominic,"" Emily said softly. ""But you do not have her intelligence.""

She raised her hand. On the court’s projection screens, three financial terminal windows flared to life.

""Your syndicate in Zurich defaulted forty-five seconds ago,"" Emily announced.

Dominic’s smile vanished. He sat bolt upright, grabbing his tablet from the table. The screen was flooded with urgent messages: SWISS ACCOUNTS FROZEN; LONDON CREDITORS SEIZING COLLATERAL; ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED BY INTERPOL FOR MONEY LAUNDERING.

""What did you do?"" Dominic whispered, his skin turning ash-gray.

""You assumed my mother gave you up out of fear,"" Emily continued, stepping toward him until only the wooden railing separated them. ""She didn't give you away to protect you, Dominic. She gave you away because you were born to an operative who tried to assassinate my grandfather. She left you enough money to live comfortably in exile, provided you never set foot on American soil.""

Emily turned her icy gaze toward Judge Sterling, who had suddenly dropped his gavel.

""Judge Sterling, your offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands were seized by the Department of Justice ten minutes ago,"" Emily added calmly. ""Federal marshals are currently standing outside this courtroom with a warrant for your arrest.""

The judge’s face contorted in panic. He knocked over his glass of water as he stood, retreating through his private chambers without a word.

Julian dropped his head onto the defense table, letting out a dry, hysterical sob. He had lost everything. Again.

Dominic stood frozen, staring at the screen that detailed his complete, irreversible annihilation. He looked at Emily, seeing for the first time the terrifying, absolute sovereign she truly was.

""Who are you?"" Dominic rasped, his voice trembling.

Emily adjusted her black coat, her eyes cold as polished obsidian.

May you like

""I am the Hawthorne you were warned about,"" Emily whispered, turning her back on him as the heavy oak doors opened once more to admit a dozen federal agents, their badges flashing under the fluorescent lights.

She walked out into the crisp autumn morning, completely unbroken, leaving the ghosts of her past to drown in their own chains."
