Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Crown

Arthur Vance’s mind fractured trying to reconcile the scene before him. The girl who had spent Thanksgiving peeling potatoes in Eleanor’s kitchen while being mocked for her state college degree was sitting in the throne of the global economy.

""You..."" Arthur pointed a shaking finger at her. ""You are Alexander Hawthorne’s daughter? The secret heiress?""

""The only heiress,"" Henderson corrected sharply, his voice slicing through the air like a razor. ""Lady Emily Hawthorne-Vane. Sole trustee of the Hawthorne Global Reserve, majority shareholder of the Atlantic Trade Consortium, and the individual who personally financed your son's startup venture three years ago through an anonymous grant.""

Julian stumbled forward, the color draining entirely from his skin. ""You... you funded NovaTech? You gave me the initial forty million?""

Emily turned her gaze upon him. It was the first time she had looked directly at his face since leaving the altar, and the sheer emptiness in her eyes terrified him far more than any rage could have.

""You thought you were a genius, Julian,"" Emily said, each word hitting him like a physical blow. ""You thought venture capitalists saw brilliance in your mediocre software. No. I paid for your patents. I paid for your penthouse. I paid for the very ring you dropped on the floor yesterday.""

""Emily, please..."" Julian’s voice cracked into a pathetic whimper. He dropped his hands onto the mahogany table, leaning forward desperately. ""You have to understand... yesterday, my mother... the pressure from the board... I was terrified! I didn't mean what I said! You know how much I love you!""

""You loved the idea of a compliant, voiceless ornament you could kick around whenever your ego felt bruised,"" Emily replied coldly. ""You told me not to make it uglier. Well, Julian. I am an artist. And I intend to make your ruin breathtaking.""

Arthur grabbed his son’s shoulder, shoving him roughly aside. The elder Vance fell to both knees on the carpet, abandoning every shred of dignity he possessed. ""Lady Emily! Forgive him! He is a fool, an arrogant boy! But the Vance family... we have served your father’s shipping networks for thirty years! Don't destroy everything my ancestors built over a lover's quarrel!""

""This is not a lover's quarrel, Arthur,"" Emily whispered, leaning forward. ""This is a contract dispute. And you breached the terms.""

She tapped the touchscreen embedded in the table. The panoramic monitors flashed again.

""At noon today, your board voted to strip you of your chairmanship,"" Emily revealed. ""They didn't have a choice. I purchased their private debts this morning. As of five minutes ago, Vance Maritime is no longer yours. It belongs to Hawthorne Logistics.""

Arthur’s eyes went wide. He clutched his chest, gasping for air as if the oxygen in the room had been sucked away. ""Then... what is left for us?""

Emily stood up, smoothing the lapels of her suit. ""Nothing. Except a very small room in upstate New York, which the federal prosecutors have already prepared for you.""
