Chapter 10 - The Bodyguard’s Dilemma

The high-pitched, frantic shriek of the alarm pierced the quiet penthouse like a physical blade. On the wall-mounted monitoring screen, the pulsing crimson light cast long, demonic shadows across the reinforced glass window of the panic room.
Viktor rushed back to the control console, his fingers flying across the keypad in a desperate attempt to read the system diagnostics. “That’s impossible,” he muttered under his breath, sweat instantly beading on his forehead. “The vault’s security protocols are hard-coded into the mainframe. He shouldn’t have manual override access from the inside.”
Elena stepped up beside him, her calm composure instantly shattering into sharp, protective alertness. “Open it, Viktor. Open it now!”
Before Viktor could press the manual release sequence, the screen above them flickered. The live feed of Aiden inside the dark vault didn't show a broken, defeated man huddled on a cot. Instead, Aiden was standing directly in front of the internal camera, a chilling, triumphant smirk plastered across his face. He wasn't trapped; he was waiting.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the panic room gave a violent shudder. A deep, mechanical grinding noise echoed from within the walls as internal hydraulic lines began to hiss and groan under immense pressure.
Across the room, Marcus, who had been marching toward the elevator with the other guards, spun around instantly, drawing his weapon back out. “Sir! What’s happening? Is the vault breaching?”
“It’s not breaching from the outside,” Viktor shouted over the blaring alarm, his eyes widening in sudden, staggering comprehension. “He bypassed the internal lock! He’s overriding the security grid using the emergency auxiliary terminal!”
Marcus’s face drained of color. He sprinted back across the marble floor, leveling his pistol directly at the reinforced glass door of the panic room. “Get back from that door, Mr. Vance!” Marcus roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Inside the vault, Aiden didn't flinch. On the screen, he raised his right hand slowly, holding a small, glowing cryptographic key-card—the very master override token that Viktor had carelessly left inside the steel briefcase on the coffee table just minutes before, a token Aiden had managed to swap during their brief confrontation near the doorway.
With a deafening crash, the heavy steel locking bolts of the vault sheared completely in half. The massive door swung open outward, crashing against the pristine white wall with explosive force.

Aiden stepped out of the darkness, his dark grey overcoat swaying slightly around his tall frame, his eyes burning with an incandescent, terrifying rage.
“Did you really think,” Aiden’s voice boomed through the penthouse, dripping with lethal irony, “that I would build a cage in my own house without keeping the master key in my pocket?”
