Chapter 4 - The Four Shadows

The sudden blackout of the corporate billboards across the city skyline cast long, dancing shadows across the white marble floor of the penthouse. Aiden’s hand remained frozen inside his coat pocket, his fingers hovering over the cold steel of his hidden pistol. He knew that drawing the weapon against Marcus would be a gamble with terrible odds—one guard was already aiming at his chest, and three others stood silently in the background, their hands resting casually near their holsters, ready to move at a moment's notice.
“You think a corporate hostile takeover saves you?” Aiden growled, his voice tight with suppressed rage. “The board answers to me. I hold fifty-one percent of the voting stock in the holding company.”
Elena chuckled, a light, melodic sound that only served to heighten the suffocating tension in the room. She walked gracefully toward the bar cart near the window, picked up a crystal tumbler, and poured herself a finger of amber whiskey without asking for permission.
“Fifty-one percent is a very impressive number, Aiden, provided the papers you signed last Tuesday were actually what you thought they were,” Elena said, taking a slow sip of the liquor. She turned her head, fixing her piercing brown eyes on him. “Did you actually read the fine print of the restructuring agreement for the maritime logistics division, or were you too busy celebrating your merger with the European syndicates?”
Aiden’s heart skipped a beat. Last Tuesday, amidst a flurry of high-stakes negotiations and dozens of legal briefs handed to him by his personal legal counsel, he had signed a stack of documents without reading every single clause. He had trusted his lead attorney implicitly—a man who had been by his side for a decade.
“Where is Keller?” Aiden demanded, his voice dropping into an ominous whisper. “Where is my lawyer?”
Marcus, still holding his weapon steady, gave a slight, humorless smirk. “Mr. Keller sends his regards, sir. He’s currently boarding a private flight to Zurich with a briefcase full of bearer bonds and the original, unaltered master ledger.”
The realization hit Aiden like a physical blow to the stomach. It wasn't just a corporate coup; it was an airtight, multi-layered conspiracy designed to strip him of his wealth, his status, and his legal standing before he even realized the board had turned against him. Every asset he owned was tied up in holding companies that now belonged to a phantom entity controlled entirely by Elena.
“You planned all of this down to the second,” Aiden said, staring at her with a mixture of hatred and grudging respect.
“I told you, Aiden,” Elena replied calmly, setting her glass down on the marble counter with a sharp clink. “When you build a throne out of lies and broken spines, it doesn’t take an earthquake to bring it down. Just the right push in the right place.”
She snapped her fingers once—a sharp, crisp sound.
Immediately, the three remaining bodyguards who had been standing in the background stepped forward in unison. But instead of defending Aiden or siding with Marcus, they unclipped their holsters, pulled their weapons out, and placed them neatly on the nearest coffee table, completely disarming themselves.

Aiden stared at them in utter bewilderment. “What are you doing? Are you insane?”
“We’re just survivors, Mr. Vance,” one of the guards muttered quietly, keeping his head bowed. “Mrs. Vance offered us double our pension funds and immunity from the federal indictments coming down tomorrow morning. Loyalty has a price, and yours simply stopped clearing.”
