Chapter 6 - Cracks in the Empire

The private elevator doors sealed shut, locking Elena away behind a wall of reinforced glass, and descended smoothly into the depths of the building. Aiden stood frozen in the center of the vast, sterile white penthouse, the weight of total isolation pressing down on his shoulders like a leaden blanket. The glittering crystal chandelier overhead seemed to mock him with its bright, indifferent reflections.
Marcus remained stationed near the doorway, his pistol held at a low, professional ready-position, eyes fixed squarely on Aiden’s every micro-movement. The three other guards had already retreated toward the perimeter, acting as sentinels of his imprisonment rather than his protectors.
Aiden slowly lowered his hands, his mind racing at overclocked speeds. For decades, he had survived the cutthroat world of international syndicates and corporate warfare by always staying three steps ahead of his enemies. He refused to accept that a carefully orchestrated trap executed by an estranged wife could become his permanent cage. There had to be a contingency—a hidden server, an off-shore backup account, a loyal cell of operatives untouched by Elena’s financial purge.
“Marcus,” Aiden spoke, his voice unnaturally calm, carrying a cold authority that still commanded a shred of instinctive obedience. “You think a pension fund and federal immunity protect you from what’s coming? Elena is a ghost playing a rich woman’s game. The moment the syndicates find out she’s back and destabilizing my holdings, they won’t care about her corporate paperwork. They’ll put a bullet in her head before the sun comes up.”
Marcus didn’t blink. His expression remained carved in stone. “Respectfully, Mr. Vance, the syndicates aren’t coming for her. They already belong to her.”
Aiden’s eyes narrowed sharply. “What are you talking about?”
“Where do you think the funding for this entire corporate buyout came from?” Marcus replied quietly. “Mrs. Vance didn’t just spend five years hiding in the shadows. She spent them quietly buying up the debt of every major cartel and triad leader you ever double-crossed. You thought you eliminated your rivals, sir. She simply consolidated them under a new management team.”
A cold dread settled deep in Aiden’s chest. The realization was staggering. It wasn’t just a legal coup or a domestic betrayal; it was a total, systemic hostile takeover of his entire criminal underworld. Every alliance he had forged, every blood pact he had signed, had been systematically bought out from underneath him while he sat comfortably in his glass tower.
Before Aiden could formulate a reply, the heavy mahogany service doors at the far end of the penthouse hallway clicked open with a sharp, echoing snap.

Heavy, unhurried footsteps echoed across the marble floor—not the light, clicking heels of Elena, but the heavy, deliberate tread of tactical boots. Aiden turned his head sharply, expecting federal agents or more hired guns.
Instead, emerging from the corridor was a figure carrying a heavy iron briefcase, his face obscured by the dim lighting of the transitional hallway, holding something that made Marcus lower his weapon in instant, absolute terror.
