SHADOWS OF THE WINTER COAT / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - Bloodline

The SUV climbed the steep, winding private roads of the Palisades, passing through an imposing wrought-iron gate that opened automatically to the vehicle's transponder. Beyond the gate lay the Glasshouse: a sprawling, modernist fortress of reinforced concrete and floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass perched on the cliff edge overlooking the Hudson River.

Inside, the house was warm, smelling of cedarwood and polished stone, completely devoid of the gaudy excess Elena remembered from his father's estate.

A middle-aged woman in a gray cardigan hurried into the foyer, holding clean towels. ""Mr. Vance, we received your call. The guest suite is ready.""

""Thank you, Martha,"" Julian nodded. He walked into the expansive living room, gently lowering Lily onto a massive white linen sofa before kneeling beside her to unlace her scuffed sneakers. His hands, scarred and tattooed with symbols of violence, handled the child's worn shoes with reverent care.

Elena stood over him, watching the surreal scene unfold. The man who had once broken a rival captain's arm at a dinner table was now carefully tucking a four-year-old’s socks into her shoes.

""She needs clean clothes,"" Elena said softly, the adrenaline finally giving way to a bone-deep weariness.

""Martha brought several boxes from the city’s department store an hour ago,"" Julian said, standing up and unbuttoning his overcoat. He slipped it off, revealing his black dress shirt, damp with sweat along the shoulder seams. ""Everything a four-year-old might need. If the sizes are wrong, we will get more.""

Elena looked at the floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, across the frozen expanse of the river, the distant lights of the city skyline shimmered like cold diamonds. It felt like another planet compared to her tiny basement apartment with the dripping pipes and the radiator that only worked on Tuesdays.

Lily stirred, turning over onto her back, her hazel eyes opening slowly. She looked at the towering glass walls, the glittering city lights, and then up at Julian, who was standing frozen beside the couch, afraid to move.

""Are we in a castle?"" Lily asked, her small voice echoing in the cavernous room.

Julian looked at Elena, completely lost, entirely stripped of his usual command.

Elena swallowed hard, stepping forward to sit on the edge of the sofa. ""No, baby. Just an old house.""

Lily looked at Julian, pointing a small finger at the serpent tattoo curling up his neck. ""Why do you have a snake on your skin, mister?""

Julian hesitated, his throat working. ""To remind me... to be careful.""

Lily considered this for a moment, then reached out and tapped his knee. ""My mommy says snakes are mean.""

A faint, self-deprecating smile touched the corner of Julian’s mouth. ""Your mommy is very smart.""

The sharp chime of an encrypted satellite phone broke the fragile moment. Julian stepped away into the adjoining study, answering it with a sharp click. Elena followed him with her eyes, watching through the glass partition.

His face transformed instantly. The warmth vanished; the cold, unyielding iron returned.

May you like

""When?"" Julian asked into the phone. A pause. ""How many?"" Another pause. His jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted beneath his beard. ""Have the secondary team pull back. If Salvatore wants a meeting, tell him I’ll be at the old pier at sunrise.""

He hung up, turning around to find Elena standing in the doorway of the study, her arms tightly folded.
