Chapter 11 - The Parley

""You're going back down there,"" Elena said, not as a question, but as an accusation.

Julian slid the phone into his pocket and turned to face her. ""Salvatore’s men hit Arthur’s diner an hour ago. Burned it to the ground. Arthur is in the wind, and Salvatore has declared that unless I surrender my territorial claims to the shipping ports, he will plaster Lily’s photograph across every syndicate ledger from Boston to Miami.""

Elena gasped, a hand flying to her mouth. ""You said we were safe here!""

""You are safe here,"" Julian insisted, taking two steps toward her, his voice low and urgent. ""This house is reinforced with ballistic steel. Martha is retired military intelligence. There are six perimeter guards with infrared surveillance on the grounds. Nothing gets through that gate.""

""And what happens to us if you don't come back?"" she asked, her voice cracking with fury and fear. ""If you end up in a ditch like your brother, who protects her then? Martha? Your hired guns?""

Julian looked down at his shoes, the weight of fifteen years of blood on his conscience pressing down onto his broad shoulders. ""If I don't come back, the deed to this property, along with offshore trust funds totaling twenty million dollars, automatically transfers into an irrevocable blind trust for Lily. You will have enough money to buy any identity, any citizenship, anywhere in the world.""

Elena slapped him.

The sound cracked like a dry branch through the quiet study. Julian didn't flinch; his head barely moved with the impact. He took the blow, his dark eyes locked onto hers, unflinching, accepting the sentence.

""You arrogant, selfish bastard,"" she wept, tears spilling freely over her cheeks now. ""Do you think I ran away five years ago because of money? I ran away because I didn't want my baby to grow up an orphan! I didn't want her to spend her life waiting for a phone call telling her her father was scraped off the pavement!""

Julian remained silent, his breath slow and deep.

""She doesn't need your millions, Julian,"" Elena whispered, her chest heaving. ""She needs a father who isn't a corpse.""

Julian reached out slowly, his fingertips gently grazing the tear track on her cheek. Elena shuddered, but for the first time in five years, she didn't pull away.

""I spent my whole life learning how to take things, Elena,"" Julian said softly. ""I never learned how to stay.""

Before she could answer, the security alarm above the study desk flashed a silent, blinding amber.
