Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Snow

Elena fought against his grip, twisting her wrist, but the mechanical leverage was absolute. ""Don't touch me!"" she hissed, struggling to keep her voice down. ""You have no rights here. Legally, she doesn't exist to you!""

""I don't operate within the confines of family court,"" Julian said evenly. He pulled her a fraction closer, forcing her to see the dark exhaustion lingering behind his own irises. For a split second, the polished crime lord vanished, replaced by the man who used to hold her hand in the dark while sirens wailed three blocks away. ""You think I came here to claim an heir? Look out that window, Elena.""

Elena’s breath hitched. She forced herself to glance beyond the idling Suburban.

Parked across the four-lane avenue, tucked under the rusted awning of an abandoned car wash, sat a dark gray sedan. Its engine was off, but the interior glow of a dashboard screen revealed two men sitting motionless in the front seats. Watching the diner. Watching the front door.

""Salvatore’s crew traced your prescription history yesterday morning,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. ""They didn't come for me. They came for leverage. If I hadn't intercepted Arthur’s ledger forty minutes ago, you’d currently be in the back of that trunk.""

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird. ""No... no, I was careful. I paid cash. I used my maiden name.""

""You used an insurance card tied to a clinic subsidized by my holding company,"" Julian answered coldly. ""A five-year-old oversight. It happens when you run out of money.""

In the booth, the blankets rustled.

""Mama?""

Lily’s voice was small, scratchy from sleep. She rubbed her left eye with a tiny fist, the red bow slightly askew on her head. She blinked through the dim ambient light, her hazel eyes locking onto the colossal figure looming above her mother.

Julian instantly dropped Elena’s wrist, stepping back into the shadows of the booth's divider.

""Mama, who is that man?"" Lily whispered, reaching out with both arms.

Elena rushed to the child, scooping her into her chest, burying her face into Lily’s warm hair. Over the girl's shoulder, she looked at Julian. He was watching the girl with an expression that terrified her far more than his anger ever could: absolute, unadulterated reverence.

""He's... an old friend, sweetie,"" Elena lied, her voice shaking. ""We have to leave now.""

""Not through the front,"" Julian stated, drawing a sleek black handgun from beneath his wool coat and quietly chambering a round.
