Chapter 6 - Beneath the Floorboards

The percussion of the gunshot rolled through Elena’s bones. Lily screamed, a high, piercing cry of terror that shredded Elena’s focus. She turned instinctively, diving back through the industrial kitchen as Arthur scrambled frantically behind a stainless-steel preparation table, weeping into his sleeves.

""Get up, Arthur!"" Elena cried, half-dragging the older man by his apron as she sprinted toward the back storeroom.

Another shot cracked outside, followed by the deep, rhythmic double-tap of Julian’s weapon. A heavy thud shook the alley door, followed by a wet groan that choked into silence. Elena didn't look back. She shoved past the towering shelves of canned peaches and dried beans, kicking aside empty crates until she found the rusted iron ring of the basement trapdoor.

""Down! Arthur, help me!""

Arthur, trembling from head to toe, gripped the cold iron ring and hauled the hatch upward. A smell of damp earth, mildew, and ancient coal dust surged into the warm kitchen air.

""Mama, I'm scared, I want to go home!"" Lily sobbed, her little fingers tangling violently into Elena's hair.

""I know, baby, I know. Close your eyes. Play the quiet game for Mama, okay? Big secret agent game."" Elena’s voice was cracked and breathless, but she forced an unnatural softness into it, kissing Lily’s tear-stained cheek before descending the wooden steps into pitch darkness.

Arthur pulled the hatch down above them, plunging them into blackness just as heavy footsteps hammered into the kitchen overhead.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Elena pressed her back against the rotting support beam beneath the floor. She clamped her hand gently over Lily’s mouth, feeling the frantic warmth of the girl’s breath against her palm. Dust rained down on their heads with every step taken above.

""Where is she, old man?"" a harsh, unfamiliar voice snarled through the floorboards.

A wet slap echoed, followed by Arthur crying out in agony. ""I don't know! She ran out the front! She went for the avenue!""

""You're lying. The boss said Julian came for the brat.""

May you like

Elena’s heart froze. They knew. It wasn't just Julian hunting for an heir; the entire syndicate knew Julian’s only bloodline was alive, vulnerable, and completely unprotected.

Suddenly, the floorboards above creaked directly over the hatch. The sound of metal scraping against metal echoed downward. Someone was lifting the ring.
