Chapter 5 - The Alley Exit

The click of the slide locking forward sounded deafening in the tiny restaurant. Lily stiffened in Elena’s embrace, sensing the sudden surge of adrenaline in her mother's body.
""Put that away!"" Elena gasped, pressing Lily’s face into her collarbone. ""Don't you dare do that in front of her!""
""Keep her head down,"" Julian ordered, his tone devoid of warmth, shifted entirely into tactical coldness. He moved toward the kitchen swing doors with silent, fluid steps. ""Arthur! Out the back, now.""
Arthur, a bald man in his late fifties wearing a grease-stained white apron, emerged from the prep line, clutching a rusted ring of keys. His hands shook so violently the keys clinked against one another like wind chimes. ""Mr. Vance, I swear to God I didn't say nothing to nobody, they just came in asking about—""
""Shut up and open the fire door,"" Julian cut him off without looking back.
Elena followed, her arms burning with the weight of Lily, whose small fingers gripped the collar of her mother's shirt. The kitchen was cold, smelling of stale fry grease and bleach. Julian moved ahead like a shadow, checking corners, his gun held low beside his thigh.
Arthur shoved the heavy metal exit bar of the service door. The heavy iron door groaned open, letting in a blast of sub-zero wind that whipped snow across the grease traps. The narrow alleyway behind the diner was dark, walled in by towering brick facades and stacked wooden pallets.
At the far end of the alley, a low whistling sound cut through the blizzard.
Julian reached out with his left arm, physically shoving Elena back against the brick threshold. ""Back inside.""
""What is it?"" Elena whispered, panic choking her throat.
Before Julian could answer, the snow at the end of the alley was shattered by the harsh glare of high-beam spotlights. A pair of heavy boots crunched into the fresh drift. A voice called out, thick with a smug, southern drawl that Elena remembered from the nightmare years.
""Julian Vance! Leaving without saying goodbye to your cousins?""
Julian didn't shout back. He simply turned his head toward Elena, his dark eyes hollow in the alley light. ""Take Lily, run back through the freezer corridor to the basement hatch. Don't stop for anything.""

""Julian—""
""Go!"" he roared, lunging outward into the snow just as the first gunshot tore through the silence, shattering the brickwork an inch above her head.
