Chapter 3 - The Cold Ledger

The paper absorbed the dampness immediately, the ink smearing at the corner. Elena recognized the faded hospital letterhead before she even read the text. St. Jude’s Memorial, dated four years and two months ago. It was Lily’s birth registry, an unsealed public copy that should have been locked in the county clerk’s archive.
""The father's name was left blank,"" Julian remarked, leaning over her slightly so she could feel the heat radiating off his chest. ""A clever touch. Most women would have tried to claim the estate the moment the second line turned pink. You took a bus to the edge of the state lines and took a job clearing half-eaten sandwiches.""
""Because being poor is safer than being near you,"" she retorted, her eyes blazing despite the tremor in her chin. ""You were at war when I left. Your brother had just been put in the ground, and your father’s men were shooting at your car on the expressway. What was I supposed to do? Wait around until someone planted a pipe bomb in her crib?""
A muscle jumped along the edge of Julian’s clenched jaw. The name of his dead brother always struck a nerve, no matter how much iron he forged around his conscience.
""The war ended,"" he said quietly.
""No,"" Elena spat back, leaning closer so their faces were separated by mere inches. ""It just moved indoors. You took your father’s seat. That doesn't make you safe, Julian. That makes you the biggest target in the state.""
As if puncturing the brittle silence, the sharp sound of a heavy diesel engine rumbled through the front windows. Headlights swept through the dining room, raking across the varnished wood, illuminating the dark grain and the dust motes spinning in the stale heat. A black Suburban with tinted glass idled at the curb, hazard lights pulsing once, twice.
Julian didn't turn around. He didn't have to; he knew his security detail’s schedule down to the second.
""Gather her things,"" Julian commanded softly.

Elena stepped fully into the booth opening, blocking Lily with her entire body. ""Over my dead body.""
Julian reached out, his hand closing over her wrist. His grip was not violent, but it was unyielding as iron rebar. ""That can be arranged, Elena, but it would deeply traumatize our daughter.""
