SHADOWS OF THE WINTER COAT / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Glasshouse

The vehicle moved silently through the snow-blanketed streets of the outer boroughs, leaving the working-class diner far behind. Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion, her little head resting against Julian’s shoulder, her small fist clutching the lapel of his blood-speckled overcoat. Julian sat perfectly upright, not daring to adjust his posture, terrified that the slightest movement might disturb her.

Elena watched him from the opposite leather bucket seat, her arms crossed over her apron, her gaze sharp and suspicious.

""Where are we going?"" she demanded.

""North. To the compound in the Palisades,"" Julian replied quietly, keeping his voice beneath the rumble of the engine. ""Salvatore doesn't have the manpower to breach the outer gate. It’s the only property I own that hasn't been compromised.""

""And then what?"" Elena asked, leaning forward, her voice laced with venom. ""Keep us locked in a golden cage while you wage another war? I spent five years washing dishes, scraping pennies to buy her winter boots, just to keep her away from this life!""

Julian looked down at Lily’s sleeping face. ""You did a good job,"" he murmured. ""She’s healthy. She’s strong.""

""Don't flatter me, Julian. It doesn't work anymore.""

Julian turned his gaze to the tinted window, watching the streetlamps blur into streaks of orange light. ""My father died six months ago, Elena. Cancer. Not a bullet.""

Elena paused, the breath catching in her throat. The patriarch of the Vance family was a monster who had ruled the city's docks with an iron fist for forty years. ""I didn't know.""

""He spent his last two weeks screaming in an empty room,"" Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of grief. ""None of his lieutenants came. None of his money helped. When they buried him, only six people showed up—and four of them were undercover feds making sure he was actually dead.""

Julian turned back to Elena, his eyes piercing through the vehicle’s dim interior. ""I realized then that I built an empire on a graveyard. I was preparing to liquidate the operations, hand the docks over to the port authority, and leave the country.""

Elena sneered bitterly. ""How noble of you. What stopped you?""

""Arthur’s medical receipts crossed my desk three days ago,"" Julian said. ""And I realized I had something left to lose.""
