Chapter 14 - The Price of Blood

""You always were short-sighted, Salvatore,"" Julian’s voice came through the speaker, chillingly steady despite the blood dripping down his sleeve. ""You thought I brought them here because it was a sanctuary.""
Salvatore frowned, his gun leveling at Julian's chest. ""What the hell are you talking about?""
""This isn't my sanctuary,"" Julian said softly, his dark eyes locking onto the camera lens mounted in the ceiling corner—looking directly at Elena through the screen. ""It's my vault. And you walked into the kill box.""
Julian slammed his hand down onto the brass panel embedded in the living room mantelpiece.
Instantly, two heavy steel shutters dropped from the ceiling behind Salvatore and his three remaining men, sealing the terrace opening with deafening force. High-intensity halogen lights mounted in the perimeter walls ignited, blinding the intruders in a wash of pure white brilliance.
Down in the safe room, Martha’s hands flew across the console. ""He triggered the lockdown override. Elena, take the child to the inner vault!""
""No!"" Elena yelled, watching the screen.
Julian moved with explosive violence. Even with a wounded shoulder, he closed the distance between himself and Salvatore before the blinded hitman could raise his revolver. Julian’s right hand caught Salvatore’s wrist, twisting it inward until bone cracked audibly through the audio feed. The gun dropped to the floor.
The two remaining gunmen opened fire, but Julian used Salvatore’s massive body as a human shield, driving the screaming enforcer backward across the broken glass. He scooped the dropped revolver from the floor, spinning around Salvatore’s shoulder, firing twice. Both gunmen collapsed onto the bloodstained rug.
Salvatore stumbled against the steel shutter, clutching his broken wrist, blood pouring from his nose. He looked at Julian with genuine, frantic terror. ""Julian... wait! We can make a deal! The families... we can divide the territory!""
Julian stood over him, his black shirt torn, the serpent tattoo on his neck slick with sweat and crimson. He raised the revolver, his finger tightening on the trigger.
""Mama,"" Lily’s small voice piped up in the safe room. She was looking at the screen, her wide hazel eyes reflecting the violent chaos. ""Is the snake man hurting that person?""
Elena looked at her daughter, then at the monitor. If Julian pulled that trigger in front of the camera, the monster would be permanent. The bloodline would be sealed in lead and ash forever.

Elena lunged forward, hitting the two-way intercom button on the console.
""Julian, look at the screen!"" she screamed into the microphone.
