Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Slap

The resonance of the sharp strike still lingered in the air of the grand ballroom, a violent percussion that shattered the polite murmur of the evening gala. Elena stood over the crumpled form of Julian, her chest heaving beneath the deep burgundy fabric of her formal evening gown, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, high bun that betrayed not a single strand of her inner turmoil. Around them, the upscale crowd of high-society guests in tailored tuxedos and designer evening wear stood frozen, champagne flutes momentarily arrested halfway to their mouths. The polished wooden floor mirrored the chandeliers above, casting a brilliant, unforgiving glare over the scene.
Elena's gaze shifted from Julian’s stunned face down to the small, trembling figure of six-year-old Lily, whose pale pink satin party dress seemed entirely too fragile for the brutal architecture of this world. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She dropped to her knees, sweeping the little girl into her arms with a fierce, protective urgency that brooked no argument. Lily buried her face in Elena’s shoulder, muffled sobs escaping the child as Elena whispered frantic, silent reassurances against her dark hair.
Julian slowly pushed himself up from the floor, his tall, athletic frame uncoiling with a calculated, dangerous grace. Despite the red welt blooming across his cheek, his expression remained chillingly smooth, his short dark hair neat, his sleek gold-patterned tuxedo jacket catching the ambient light. He adjusted his black bowtie with agonizing slowness, his dark eyes locking onto Elena with a predatory calm that sent a shiver down her spine.
""You think a public spectacle changes anything, Elena?"" Julian’s voice cut through the heavy silence, low and rich, carrying an undercurrent of quiet menace that made the surrounding guests step back involuntarily.
Elena didn't shrink away. She tightened her grip on Lily, shielding the child’s body with her own, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom. ""Stay away from her, Julian. If you ever come near her again, I won't just hit you—I'll burn your entire empire to ash.""
May you like
Julian offered a thin, mirthless smile, stepping closer despite the collective intake of breath from the crowd. ""Empires are built to withstand fire, my love. And Lily is a part of mine, whether you like it or not.""
Before Elena could retort, the heavy mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom burst open, and a squad of private security guards flooded the room, their radios crackling with urgent static.
