Chapter 3 - Whispers Across the Table

The dim lighting of the corner booth at the downtown diner offered a stark contrast to the blinding chandeliers of the ballroom, yet the tension here felt suffocatingly thick. Elena stirred her black coffee, watching the steam rise and dissipate into the cold night air. Across from her sat Marcus, a former lead investigator for Julian’s corporate security team, now living on the frayed edges of society with a permanent shadow of paranoia hanging over him.

""You're playing a dangerous game, Elena,"" Marcus muttered, keeping his eyes fixed on the greasy laminate tabletop. ""Julian doesn't just buy people out; he destroys their entire foundation. If he knows you're digging into the corporate shell companies, he won't just take Lily—he'll make sure you legally cease to exist.""

Elena slammed her spoon down against the ceramic cup, the sharp clatter echoing in the quiet diner. ""He already took six years of my life, Marcus. He made me believe my child died in that hospital room while he stood smiling at a charity gala. I want the truth, and I want my life back.""

Marcus looked up, his weathered face etched with deep lines of regret. He reached into his leather jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, sliding it across the table with a fingertip.

""This has every bank transfer, every falsified medical report, and the names of the doctors who signed off on the cover-up,"" Marcus said softly. ""Use it wisely. Because the moment you plug this into an unsecured network, a silent alarm goes off on Julian's personal terminal.""

Elena reached for the drive, her fingers inches away from the metal casing, when the diner's overhead lights suddenly flickered and died.
