Chapter 4 - The Flash Drive Trap

The darkness inside the diner was absolute for three agonizing seconds before the emergency battery-backup lights flickered on, casting a sickly amber glow over the room. Elena’s hand hovered over the flash drive, but before her fingers could graze the metal, a heavy hand slammed down onto the table, pinning the device beneath broad, calloused knuckles.
Elena looked up, terror gripping her chest. It wasn't Marcus. Marcus had slipped out through the side exit moments before the power failed. Standing towering over the booth was Viktor, Julian’s chief enforcer, his massive frame blocking any escape route.
""Mr. Vance sends his regards,"" Viktor rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. With a swift, practiced motion, he swept the flash drive off the table and pocketed it inside his heavy wool coat.
Elena stood up abruptly, knocking her chair backward with a loud crash. ""Give that back! That's stolen evidence of corporate fraud and child endangerment!""
Viktor didn't flinch. He merely tilted his head, his expression as impassive as a granite monument. ""Mr. Vance doesn't care about evidence, Mrs. Vance. He cares about control. And right now, you are stepping way out of bounds.""

Before Viktor could turn away, a small, fierce voice pierced the heavy atmosphere from the kitchen doorway.
""Leave my mom alone!"" Lily shouted, holding a heavy iron skillet with both hands, her eyes blazing with a courage far beyond her six years.
