Chapter 14 - Sirens Below

The wailing of police sirens grew deafeningly loud, filling the penthouse as flashing red and blue lights painted the shattered glass walls in erratic strokes. Thomas lowered his service weapon, walking over to the shattered balcony doors to look down at the growing armada of police cruisers and federal vehicles surrounding the base of the tower.
""It's over, Julian,"" Thomas said without turning around, his voice heavy with exhaustion. ""Federal marshals are securing the perimeter. You can't buy your way out of federal conspiracy charges and armed breach of corporate oversight.""
Julian didn't answer his brother. His gaze remained locked entirely on Elena, who knelt down to pick up Lily, holding the little girl securely in her arms. The weight of the past six years seemed to hang heavy in the air between them—a chasm of broken promises, stolen memories, and unforgivable betrayals.
""Mommy, are we safe now?"" Lily whispered softly, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder.
""Yes, baby. We're safe,"" Elena whispered back, her voice firm and resolute as she turned her back on Julian, preparing to walk toward the elevator.

Elena paused, turning her head slightly over her shoulder to give him one last look of utter disdain. ""Freedom isn't something you give, Julian. It's something I just took back.""
