Chapter 9 - Darkness in the Penthouse

The sudden blackout cut off the ambient hum of the building's climate control system, leaving the penthouse in an eerie, suffocating silence. Outside the ballistic glass windows, the city lights flickered across the skyline, but inside, the room was shrouded in heavy, oppressive shadows.

""What is the meaning of this?"" Julian's voice rang out, sharp and laced with sudden paranoia as he moved toward his desk terminal. ""Emergency power should have kicked in instantly!""

Elena pulled Lily down behind a heavy leather sofa, shielding the child’s body with her own. Her heart hammered against her ribs. This wasn't a standard power failure; someone had cut the primary grid from the main substation inside the building.

""Thomas!"" Elena called out softly into the darkness. ""Where are you?""

""I'm right here,"" Thomas’s voice echoed from near the wet bar, followed by the metallic click of a heavy-duty flashlight snapping on. The bright beam cut across the room, illuminating swirling dust particles in the air.

As the beam swept across the floor, it caught something horrifying: the heavy glass double doors leading to the balcony were shattered inward, shards of safety glass sparkling like diamonds across the Persian rug. Standing silhouette-like in the open balcony doorway was a tall, heavily built figure wearing a tactical vest, holding a suppressed firearm.

""Julian Vance,"" a cold, modulated voice echoed through the room. ""You’ve been summoned for a different kind of audit.""
