Chapter 5 - Iron and Resolve

Viktor’s stoic expression cracked for a fraction of a second as he looked down at the little girl holding a heavy iron skillet like a medieval weapon. The sheer audacity of the child seemed to momentarily disarm the seasoned enforcer. Taking advantage of his hesitation, Elena lunged forward, grabbing Lily by the waist and pulling her backward into the relative safety of the kitchen service corridor.
""Smart kid,"" Viktor muttered darkly, not pursuing them, knowing that creating a chaotic scene in a public space didn't fit Julian’s strict mandate of controlled optics. ""Enjoy your little victory, Elena. The clock is ticking down to zero.""
With a final, heavy stride, Viktor turned and walked out into the rainy night, the diner door swinging shut behind him with a dull metallic click.
Elena sank against the tiled wall of the kitchen, pulling Lily into a trembling embrace. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she stroked the child’s dark hair. They had lost the flash drive, but they had gained something far more critical: confirmation that Julian was panicking. He wasn't just watching them; he was actively deploying his heavy artillery.
""Mommy, are we going to run again?"" Lily whispered, her big eyes looking up with heartbreaking maturity.
May you like
Elena forced a reassuring smile, wiping a stray tear from her cheek, though her eyes burned with fierce determination. ""No, sweetie. We're done running. It's time to take the fight straight to his doorstep.""
She grabbed her trench coat, took Lily by the hand, and walked out the back door into the alley, heading straight toward the towering glass monolith of Vance Global Enterprises.
