Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Registry

The heavy oak doors of the municipal archive room smelled of old paper, fading ink, and decades of buried secrets. Elena sat under the harsh flicker of a fluorescent bulb, the blue glow of a microfiche reader casting harsh shadows across her face. Her fingers flew over the keyboard, searching for the court records from six years ago—the documents Julian had meticulously scrubbed from the public domain.

Lily sat quietly on a wooden bench nearby, swinging her legs back and forth, clutching a small, worn-out drawing pad. The contrast between the child’s innocent drawings and the dark legal labyrinth Elena was navigating felt unbearable. Every click of the mouse was a heartbeat ticking down toward a confrontation they couldn't afford to lose.

Suddenly, the screen froze. A restricted-access file appeared, bearing a high-level security watermark that only corporate executives or high-ranking judicial officials could bypass. Elena leaned closer, her breath catching in her throat. The file wasn't just a record of custody; it was a financial transaction ledger linking Julian’s holding company to the very adoption agency that had overseen Lily's placement.

The door behind her creaked open. Elena spun around, her heart leaping into her throat, expecting to see Julian’s tall silhouette blocking the exit. Instead, an elderly man in a faded tweed jacket stepped out of the shadows, holding a thick manila folder stamped with red ink.

""You shouldn't be looking for ghosts, Mrs. Vance,"" the archivist whispered, his voice trembling as he slid the folder across the desk. ""Some doors, once opened, can never be shut again.""
