Chapter 1 - The Razor’s Edge

The sterile chill of Room 418 stripped the air thin. Dr. Mercer did not cross the threshold with clinical detachment; he swept in with the focused urgency of a soldier under fire. Behind him, three surgical nurses filed through the door, their latex gloves snapping taut against their wrists.

"Step back, sir," Dr. Mercer ordered, his gaze cutting toward the bedside monitor. The green line tracking Elena’s heart dipped from a steady rhythm into a chaotic, jagged flutter. The sharp, rhythmic alarm sounded—a high-frequency shriek that sliced clean through Julian’s dazed wonder.

Julian’s grip tightened around Leo. He could feel the four-year-old’s ribs vibrating against his ribs, small and bird-like, the boy’s fingers twisting into the lapel of Julian’s navy jacket. Elena’s hand, slick with cold perspiration, slid down the white sheet. Her knuckles brushed Julian’s before falling slack.

"Julian..." Her voice was barely a sigh, thinner than paper. The soft bloom of color that had lit her face when she spoke of the baby vanished, replaced by an alarming, chalky gray.

"Elena, look at me," Julian urged, lunging forward, but a senior nurse wedged an arm between them.

"We need room right now! Postpartum hemorrhage. Get the pitocin, start a second wide-bore line immediately!"

"Daddy, Mommy’s hands are cold," Leo whimpered, his face burying into the hollow of Julian’s neck. The small drops of dried blood on Leo’s shirt—from a playground stumble earlier that chaotic afternoon—suddenly looked terrifyingly prophetic under the fluorescents.

"Take the children out," Mercer barked without turning around. Two nurses gently lifted the swaddled newborn girl from Elena’s slackened arms, placing her swiftly into a clear acrylic bassinet to clear the bed for resuscitation.

"What's happening to her?" Julian shouted, his voice cracking, raw with a terror he hadn't known in all his years of calculating life’s odds. "You said delivery was safe!"

"Julian, out," the nurse whispered firmly, guiding his shoulder toward the door. As the heavy door swung shut, the last sight Julian caught was Elena’s head rolling back, her eyes fluttering open once more, seeking him through the sea of blue surgical scrubs.
