Chapter 15 - Heartbeats in the Light

Two years later.

A seaside cottage sat surrounded by salt spray and blooming wild roses. The afternoon sun bathed the wooden porch in warm, golden honey.

Julian stood by the railing, watching Leo—now six—sprinting across the soft grass, chasing a golden retriever that bounded after a tennis ball. Beside the porch swing, Clara, two years old and bubbling with mischievous energy, wobbled toward her father on sturdy little legs, clutching a bright yellow dandelion.

"Daddy! Look! Flower!" Clara crowed, thrusting the crumpled stem into his palm.

Julian scooped her up, tossing her into the air until she squealed with pure delight, catching her securely against his chest. Her laughter was music, vibrating right against his sternum.

Elena walked out from the kitchen screen door, carrying a pitcher of cold lemonade, her hair caught in the same messy, beautiful bun she wore on the day their lives collided in Room 418. She leaned against Julian’s side, resting her head against his shoulder as they watched Leo tumble safely onto the lawn.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly.

Julian listened to the layered sounds of their life: Clara’s soft breathing against his neck, Leo’s distant laughter, the rhythmic crash of the ocean waves against the rocks below.

"I'm thinking about the monitor in Room 418," Julian answered quietly, pressing a tender kiss to Elena’s temple. "How terrified I was when the lines went wild. And how I didn't understand that sometimes, the heart has to break out of its old rhythm entirely before it can find the beat it was always meant to hold."

Elena smiled, wrapping her arm around his waist. Across the yard, Leo turned, waved his arms wildly, and shouted, "Daddy, watch this!"

Julian set Clara down, took his wife’s hand, and walked out into the sun to catch his son.
