Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

The fragile peace shattered on Friday afternoon when Julian’s mother, Evelyn Vance, arrived unannounced with her spare key.
Evelyn was a woman of rigid social poise, draped in tailored cashmere, whose life was governed by social decorum and public standing. When she opened the door and found a mountain of laundry on the sofa and the unmistakable scent of baby powder filling the air, her face hardened into marble.
"Julian," she said, surveying the room as if evaluating a crime scene. "Your assistant told me you took emergency family leave. I assumed it was a medical issue of your own."
Her eyes drifted to the hallway, where Elena stood in an oversized knit sweater, holding the nursery door ajar.
"Elena?" Evelyn’s eyebrows arched. "You disappeared years ago. What is this theatrical performance?"
"Mother, stop," Julian said, stepping firmly between them. "Elena almost died this week. Show some respect."
"Respect for what? For someone showing up on your doorstep with another man's toddler and a newborn child?" Evelyn’s voice was venomously polite. "Julian, you are the managing director of a tier-one firm. You cannot simply allow old romantic nostalgia to bankrupt your future. Have you had a paternity test?"
The room went deathly silent. Elena flinched as if struck across the mouth, her jaw trembling.
Julian felt a hot surge of rage, but he kept his voice deadly quiet. "Get out."
"Excuse me?" Evelyn blinked, stunned.

"You brought me up to believe that reputation is everything," Julian said, his eyes drilling into his mother's. "You were wrong. Responsibility is everything. Love is everything. That baby in there is my blood, and Leo is under my protection. If you cannot look upon them with unconditional kindness, you do not belong in this home."
Evelyn stared at her son, realizing for the first time that the boy she could manipulate through guilt had vanished. She turned on her heel and the front door clicked shut behind her.
