Chapter 10 - The Envelope

On a crisp Tuesday morning, the courier delivered a thick manila envelope from the genetic testing laboratory.

Julian brought it inside and laid it unopened on the kitchen counter. Elena noticed it immediately. She froze, clutching Clara against her shoulder.

"Is that it?" she asked, her voice tight.

"Yes," Julian said.

She walked slowly to the island, staring at the sealed flap. "Aren't you going to open it?"

Julian picked up the envelope, walked across the kitchen, and fed it straight into the motorized paper shredder beneath his desk. The machine hummed steadily, slicing the sealed document into ribbons of indecipherable white confetti.

Elena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Julian! What are you doing?"

Julian looked at her, his eyes unwavering, filled with quiet certainty. "I looked at that envelope and realized that if it said 99.9%, nothing would change. And if by some cosmic error it said 0%, I would still love that little girl with every beat of my heart, and I would still raise her as my own."

He stepped close, wrapping his arms around both Elena and the infant tucked between them.

"I don't need science to tell me who my daughter is," he whispered into Elena’s hair. "I chose her the second I held her in that nursery. And I choose you. Every single day."

Elena leaned into his embrace, her shoulders shaking with silent, cathartic tears. For the first time since the ordeal began in Room 418, the lingering ghosts of guilt and suspicion dissolved into the clean autumn light.
