Chapter 11 - A Father's Grave

On a Saturday afternoon, Julian drove them out to the coastal cemetery where Paul was buried. The hill overlooked the gray, rhythmic sweep of the Atlantic Ocean, windswept and serene beneath an overcast sky.

Julian held Clara wrapped warmly in a fleece suit, while Elena walked ahead holding Leo’s hand. They stopped before a modest granite marker bearing the name: Paul Joseph Miller — Beloved Husband, Devoted Father.

Leo knelt down, placing a small bunch of yellow dandelions he had picked along the gravel path onto the cold stone. "Hi, Daddy Paul. I’m learning how to build towers. Julian is trying, but his roofs are crooked."

Julian smiled through a sudden prick of tears. He stepped forward and rested his free hand on Leo’s small shoulder, then looked down at the headstone.

"Thank you, Paul," Julian spoke inwardly to the quiet earth. "Thank you for loving them when I was too foolish to be here. I promise you, with everything I am, he will never forget who gave him his first lessons in kindness. I will guard them both."

Elena reached out, her fingers sliding into Julian’s empty hand, interlacing tightly. The three of them stood together against the ocean wind—not as competing pasts, but as a continuous circle of care honoring those who came before.
