Chapter 12 - Bridges Over Broken Water

Two months after the hospital discharge, a tentative knock sounded at the front door.
Julian opened it to find his mother, Evelyn. She looked remarkably diminished without her usual icy bravado. She held a small, beautifully wrapped gift box in her gloved hands.
"Julian," she began, her voice unusually hesitant. "May I come in for just five minutes?"
Julian hesitated, then stepped aside, holding the door open.
Elena came out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on an apron, while Leo sat on the carpet coloring a giant dinosaur poster.
Evelyn walked into the room, her eyes immediately drawn to the crib in the corner where Clara was practicing rolling over. She slowly approached the crib, looking down at the infant’s laughing face. Clara had Julian’s eyes—the unmistakable Vance eyes that had passed down through four generations.
Evelyn’s composure cracked. Her lip trembled, and she quickly turned to Elena.
"I said cruel, unforgivable things, Elena," Evelyn whispered, her voice choking. "I was terrified for my son. I was trapped in my own narrow expectations of how a family ought to look. I am so deeply sorry."
Elena looked at the older woman, recognizing the deep-seated fear beneath the arrogance. Grace, she knew, was not earned; it was given when least deserved.

"Would you like to hold your granddaughter, Evelyn?" Elena asked gently.
Tears spilled freely down Evelyn’s powdered cheeks as she nodded, reaching out her trembling arms to receive the child.
