Chapter 4 - The Whispering Ghost

By mid-afternoon, Elena had been transferred back to the intermediate recovery floor. Her face remained wan, but her brown eyes were open, clear, and steady. When Julian entered, carrying Leo while pushing the wheeled bassinet, her gaze locked onto him with defensive vulnerability.
"You brought her," Elena murmured, her voice scratchy from the extubation tube.
Julian set Leo on a chair with a picture book, then rolled the bassinet right beside Elena’s mattress. He sat on the edge of the bed and picked up her limp hand. "Why, Elena? Why didn't you tell me when you took the test?"
A shadow crossed her brow. "Paul was gone, Julian. I was an emotional wreck. When we slept together... it was pure grief and memory. Afterward, I felt ashamed. I thought you’d think I trapped you. You had your promotions, your clean modern apartment, your freedom. I was a widow with a toddler. How could I chain you to my wreckage?"
"I loved you," Julian said simply. "Even when we fought, even when we walked away, you were the standard by which I judged every other living soul. You should have given me the chance to choose."
"I was terrified you would choose out of obligation," she whispered, a tear tracing the crease beside her nose. "A child shouldn't be an invoice for a moral debt."
Julian leaned down until his forehead rested gently against hers, breathing her familiar scent of vanilla and clean skin beneath the hospital soap. "Look at me. There is no debt here. None."

Between them, the baby let out a tiny, hiccuping coo. Elena turned her head, her smile blooming through her tears. "What are we going to call her?"
"Clara," Julian murmured, recalling the quiet grace that held him together in the darkest hour of the morning. "Clara Hope."
