Chapter 13 - The Second Confession

That night, after the children were asleep and Evelyn had departed with a quiet promise to visit weekly, Julian and Elena sat on the balcony wrapped in a wool blanket, sipping red wine beneath the clear winter stars.

"You forgave her so easily," Julian murmured, staring out at the constellation of city lights.

"Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick," Elena smiled softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Besides, Clara deserves a grandmother who loves her. We can't build a good future out of old grudges."

Julian turned to face her, taking her wine glass and setting it aside. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, velvet box.

Elena’s breath hitched. "Julian..."

"This isn't an impulse, and it isn't an obligation," Julian said, opening the box to reveal a simple, elegant sapphire ring flanked by two small diamonds. "The center stone is you. The two smaller stones are Leo and Clara. I spent six years running after goals that meant nothing when the room went dark. I want to build our home, Elena. Legally, spiritually, completely."

Elena touched the ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had answered a desperate midnight call and remade his entire world to become her sanctuary.

"Yes," she whispered, her smile luminous in the starlight. "A thousand times, yes."
