Chapter 8 - The Weight of Paul

That evening, the tension lingered thick as smoke. Elena sat at the dining table, her fingers tracing the rim of an untouched mug of tea. Leo was asleep, exhausted from an afternoon of drawing.

"She’s right about one thing," Elena said quietly, not meeting Julian’s eyes. "A paternity test. You need one."

Julian paused in the middle of drying a skillet. "I don't need a lab slip to know who Clara is."

"I need you to have one," Elena insisted, looking up, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "Not for your mother. For you. Ten years from now, when things get hard—and they will get hard, Julian—I never want you looking at Clara wondering if you were fooled. I want your conviction to be absolute. No doubts in the dark."

Julian laid the dish towel down and walked to the table. He pulled a chair close, sitting beside her.

"And what about Leo?" he asked gently. "How do we carry Paul’s memory without making Leo feel like an outsider in his own home?"

Elena let out a ragged breath, burying her face in her palms. "Paul was gentle, Julian. He knew I carried a piece of you in my heart that never healed. He never held it against me. He loved Leo with everything he had. I’m so afraid Leo will think I'm replacing his father."

"We don't replace people we love, Elena," Julian said softly, pulling her hands away from her face and holding them tight. "We just make the circle bigger. There’s room enough in this house for Paul’s memory, and there’s room enough for me."

The next morning, Julian submitted the cheek swabs for Clara’s DNA panel. He did it not out of suspicion, but out of honoring Elena's plea for clean slate honesty.
