Chapter 14 - The Ring of Truth

The wedding was small, held on a bright spring morning in the small stone chapel where Sister Clara served.
There were no massive corporate guest lists, no flashy displays. Only Evelyn sitting proudly in the front pew holding Clara, who was now babbling happily in a white lace dress; a few close friends; and Leo, who served with solemn dignity as the ring bearer.
When Leo walked up the aisle carrying the velvet cushion, he didn't hand the rings directly to the minister. Instead, he looked up at Julian.
"Julian?" Leo whispered loudly enough for the small congregation to hear.
Julian knelt down on the flagstone floor so he was eye-to-eye with the boy. "Yes, Leo?"
"Are you going to be my real dad now?"
The chapel fell pin-drop silent. Elena bit her lip, tears sparkling in her eyes.
"I’m going to be your dad who loves you every single day, Leo," Julian said, his voice ringing with steady conviction. "And Paul will always be your dad in heaven watching over you. You are lucky enough to have two fathers who love you more than life itself."

Leo thought about this for a brief second, his face brightening with absolute satisfaction. "Okay. That’s good. Here are the rings."
Laughter rippled through the pews, warm and joyful, washing away the last lingering remnants of fear.
