Chapter 13 - The Broken Gavel

The Oakridge High School auxiliary gymnasium was packed to overflowing by six-thirty the following evening. Folding metal chairs clattered on the basketball hardwood as over four hundred parents, teachers, and curious citizens squeezed into the bleachers. Along the western wall, a forest of news tripods stood shoulder-to-shoulder, cameras trained on the elevated dais where the five members of the Oakridge District School Board sat behind dark skirts.
At the center of the dais sat Superintendent Margaret Sterling, an imposing woman with silver hair and an expression of frozen administrative displeasure. To her right sat Arthur Harris, immaculate in a fresh charcoal suit, looking completely relaxed. Beside him, seated at the guest podium, was Eleanor Vance.
Vance wore a modest navy dress, no makeup, and kept her eyes cast downward, playing the role of the traumatized, dedicated educator to absolute perfection. A white sympathy ribbon was pinned to her lapel.
""The special session of the Oakridge District Board of Education is now in order,"" Superintendent Sterling announced, striking her wooden gavel against the sound block. The loud thwack echoed across the high rafters, cutting through the angry murmurs of the crowd.
""Before we open the floor to public comment,"" Sterling continued, reading smoothly from a prepared script, ""the board wishes to address the unfortunate incident involving Room 204. Oakridge Elementary has always maintained the highest standards of safety and personal decorum. While the method of discipline employed on Tuesday morning was unorthodox, our internal inquiry has concluded that Mrs. Eleanor Vance acted within broad classroom management authority, facing extraordinary provocations from an unruly environment.""
Boos and furious shouts erupted from the bleachers. Several mothers stood up, waving handmade signs reading: PROTECT OUR CHILDREN, NOT PREDATORS.
""Order!"" Sterling slammed the gavel repeatedly. ""Order, or I will have the municipal bailiffs clear the auditorium! Furthermore, the board has taken note of the violent actions of individual parents who chose to trespass, destroy district property, and terrorize staff. The board fully endorses the criminal complaints currently processed by the District Attorney’s office against Mr. Marcus Thorne.""
Arthur Harris leaned back in his leather chair, folding his hands, a satisfied smirk curling at the edges of his mouth. He looked toward the side exit, knowing Marcus Thorne was still tied up in county arraignment red tape, unable to post the inflated cash bond Julian Ross had been fighting all afternoon.
""Therefore,"" Sterling concluded, raising her chin, ""this board moves to dismiss the petition for Mrs. Vance's termination, recommending a simple two-week administrative leave with full restitution—""
The heavy double crash doors at the back of the gym slammed open with the force of an explosion.
The entire auditorium went dead silent. Heads swiveled as one toward the rear entrance.

Framed in the bright autumn twilight stood Marcus Thorne. He was cleanly shaved, dressed in a sharp black suit, his posture completely unyielding. Walking beside him, holding his left hand with quiet, unbroken courage, was Lily. Her fresh, beautiful pixie cut caught the gymnasium lights, and around her delicate neck, the silver locket gleamed brightly against her white dress.
And walking right behind them, wheeling a heavy cart loaded with three identical legal crates, was Julian Ross.
