Chapter 14 - Scorched Earth

A stunned collective gasp ripped through the audience. Reporters scrambled, camera lenses pivoting in unison toward the center aisle. Arthur Harris jumped to his feet, his chair screeching against the stage floor, his face draining of all color.

""Superintendent!"" Harris shouted into his microphone, his voice cracking with sudden hysteria. ""That man is currently under active criminal indictment! He is legally barred from municipal grounds! Officers, arrest him immediately!""

Two uniformed bailiffs moved forward from the sidelines, but Julian Ross intercepted them with a sheaf of stamped legal documents raised high above his head.

""Stand down, officers!"" Julian roared, his booming courtroom voice easily overpowering the auditorium sound system. ""This is an emergency Writ of Habeas Corpus signed three hours ago by Superior Court Judge Evelyn Hayes! All charges against Marcus Thorne have been dismissed with extreme prejudice due to documented prosecutorial fraud and fabricated affidavits!""

The gym exploded into pandemonium. Parents stood on their chairs, cheering and clapping, while flashes strobed continuously across Marcus’s face.

Marcus didn't smile. He walked steadily down the central aisle, leading Lily by the hand. Every step was deliberate, measured, unstoppable. When they reached the foot of the dais, Marcus gently guided Lily toward the first row of bleachers, where David Keller—the vice principal who had tried to warn him—stepped forward, offering Lily a warm, protective nod.

""Sit here with David, sweetie,"" Marcus said softly. ""It’s over in five minutes.""

Lily looked up at her father with her bright hazel eyes, completely devoid of the terror that had consumed her forty-eight hours ago. ""Make them tell the truth, Dad.""

Marcus turned and ascended the wooden stairs of the stage. Superintendent Sterling looked frozen in horror, her gavel hovering uselessly in the air. Eleanor Vance shrank back into her chair, her hands gripping her notepad so tightly that her knuckles cracked.

Marcus didn't take the guest podium. He walked directly to Arthur Harris’s microphone, leaning down, his dark eyes locking onto the trembling principal.

""Arthur,"" Marcus's voice echoed through the gym’s massive speakers, rich, terrifying, and clear. ""Did you think I kept the copies at my house?""

Julian Ross slammed the first crate onto the stage table, pulling off the cardboard lid. Inside lay hundreds of bound, color-coded audit dossiers.

""For six years, Arthur Harris and Eleanor Vance have operated an illicit procurement network,"" Marcus announced, addressing the media cameras directly. ""Over four million dollars in state education grants were funneled into shell organizations, signed off by Mrs. Vance under her alias, Eleanor Vance-Dumont. The complete banking records, IP addresses, digital signatures, and transfer logs were delivered to the United States Department of Justice forty-five minutes ago.""

Superintendent Sterling dropped her gavel. It rolled off the table, clattering onto the stage floor with a hollow, pathetic rattle.
