Chapter 4 - The Sound of Steel

The metallic snip of the shears echoed through the silent classroom, sending an involuntary shiver through every child present. Mrs. Vance instinctively took a half-step back, her pristine heel knocking against her wastebasket.
""You wouldn't dare,"" she breathed, her voice finally betraying a tremor of panic. ""There are children here, Thorne. Assaulting a state employee is a felony.""
""Is it?"" Marcus asked, his tone deceptively conversational. He turned the scissors around in his grip, holding them by the closed blades, before casually tossing them onto the middle of the floor with a loud, clattering bang. ""Then remember that word when the detectives arrive. Because what happened in this room wasn't pedagogy, Vance. It was corporal assault on a minor under color of authority.""
Before the teacher could retort, the classroom door burst open again. Principal Harris rushed into the room, gasping for breath, his tie askew, followed closely by two school resource officers.
""Marcus, stop!"" Harris yelled, raising both hands placatingly. ""Step back from the desk immediately!""
Marcus didn't flinch. He kept his eyes locked onto Vance, whose composed mask was rapidly crumbling into a display of wounded indignation.
""Arthur,"" Vance turned to the principal, adopting an aggrieved sob. ""Thank God you're here. This man broke into my classroom, threatened my life with physical weapons, and terrorized my entire class! I want him arrested immediately! I want him escorted off school grounds in handcuffs!""
Principal Harris looked between the discarded scissors on the floor, Vance’s trembling hands, and finally down at Lily, who remained curled into a ball behind her father’s long legs. The sight of the child’s butchered hair struck Harris like a physical blow; his jaw slacked, his professional composure faltering.
""Eleanor..."" Harris stammered, glancing around at the dozens of young witnesses. ""Did you... did you cut Lily’s hair?""
""She was violating the dress code!"" Vance snapped, the facade slipping to reveal ugly indignation. ""I established clear boundaries! As a teacher, I have the inherent right to maintain classroom order!""
""Officer Daniels,"" Marcus addressed the taller of the two school officers, completely ignoring Vance. ""I want a formal police report logged right now. And I suggest you secure those scissors as state evidence before she attempts to scrub them.""
The officer hesitated, his hand lingering near his utility belt as he looked toward the principal for direction. Just then, Lily reached up, tugging weakly on Marcus’s jacket sleeve.

""Dad,"" she whispered, her voice barely audible through the tension. ""She didn't just cut my hair. She took mom's silver locket from my desk drawer... she said I was playing with it.""
Marcus’s entire body went rigid. The locket was the only physical keepsake Lily’s mother had left behind before she died three years ago.
