Chapter 3 - Cold Reckoning

Marcus didn't glance at the teacher. Instead, his eyes stayed glued to Lily. He crossed the room in three deliberate strides, dropping to one knee beside her wooden desk. The young boy sitting adjacent scrambled backward against his seat, sensing the sheer intensity radiating from the man.
""Lily-bug,"" Marcus whispered, his voice cracking slightly beneath the weight of sorrow. He gently reached up, his large, rough hand hovering over her temple, terrified to hurt her further.
""Dad..."" she whimpered, her tiny voice catching in her throat. She leaned into his chest, burying her face into his expensive wool lapel, weeping so violently that her small frame trembled against his ribs. ""She told everyone I was dirty. She said it was in the rules...""
Marcus wrapped his arms around her, pressing a kiss against the top of her ruined bangs. He inhaled the familiar scent of her strawberry shampoo, mingled now with the sterile sting of fear. ""You did nothing wrong. Look at me, Lily. You did nothing wrong.""
""Mr. Thorne, that is quite enough drama,"" Mrs. Vance's sharp tone cut across the room. She folded her hands over her stomach, stepping forward from her desk. ""Your daughter was repeatedly warned about classroom presentation and dress code compliance. Her hair was falling into her eyes during the standardized practice tests. Oakridge holds high standards of discipline. When parents fail to manage basic hygiene and decorum at home, educators must intervene.""
A collective gasp rippled through the ten-year-old students. Some looked horrified; others stared down at their desks, paralyzed by Vance’s notorious tyranny.
Marcus stood up slowly. Rising to his full height of six-foot-two, his frame completely eclipsed the morning light spilling from the tall windows, casting Mrs. Vance in deep shadow. He turned around, his expression entirely devoid of warmth, replaced by an arctic calm far more terrifying than a shout.
""Did you touch her?"" he asked quietly.
""I removed an active distraction in accordance with institutional autonomy,"" Vance replied, tilting her chin up, banking on twenty years of tenure to shield her. ""If you take issue with school policy, you may schedule an appointment with the board.""

Marcus took a step forward, his eyes landing directly on the stainless steel scissors resting on the mahogany desk. Without breaking eye contact, he reached out, picked up the shears, and tested their weight in his palm.
Mrs. Vance’s pale face lost the last trace of its haughty color as Marcus raised the cold metal blades between them.
