Chapter 2 - The Red Line

""Don't do it, Marcus,"" the voice warned.

Marcus whirled around, adrenaline electric in his veins. Standing by the stairwell door was David Keller, the school vice principal and an old acquaintance from their college days. David was pale, holding a blue file folder tightly against his chest, eyes wide with genuine distress.

""Get out of my way, David,"" Marcus warned, his tone dangerously low. ""You know what she did. It’s already on half the parents' group chats.""

""I know,"" David whispered, glancing frantically toward the main hall where other classroom doors remained shut. ""I saw the clip five minutes ago. Principal Harris is already en route. But if you kick that door open in a rage, the school board will use it against you. They will paint you as an unstable threat, lock the building down, and Vance will play the victim. Think of Lily.""

Marcus's jaw tightened until the muscles ached. ""My daughter was assaulted in front of thirty witnesses by an adult whose paycheck I fund. Don't speak to me about protocol.""

Ignoring David's outstretched hand, Marcus pushed the brass handle down. The latch gave way with a sharp, echoing click, and Marcus pushed the heavy door inward.

The classroom descended into absolute silence. The rhythmic scratch of chalk against slate abruptly halted. Thirty pairs of wide, terrified eyes swiveled from the front board to the tall man standing framed in the threshold.

Lily’s head snapped up. Her cheeks were slick with fresh tears, her eyes bloodshot and swollen, but what made Marcus’s heart lurch was the jagged, merciless gap sheared across her forehead. The delicate hair she had grown for years lay scattered on the linoleum floor beneath her seat like trash.

At the podium, Mrs. Vance turned slowly. Her beige blazer was pristine, her slicked-back blonde bun without a single stray hair. She held a red grading pen in one hand, the stainless steel shears resting boldly beside a stack of workbooks on her desk. When she saw Marcus, her cold lips tightened into a thin, disdainful line.

""Mr. Thorne,"" Vance said, her voice dripping with calculated condescension. ""This is an active instructional hour. Parents are not permitted without an administrative escort.""

Marcus stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind him. The sound of the lock clicking back into place resonated like the chamber of a gun sliding shut.
