Chapter 8 - The Mirror

The salon bell chimed softly as Marcus held the door open, guiding Lily inside by her shoulders. The studio was modern, calm, and smelled of lavender and clean shampoo—a deliberate world away from the harsh chemical tang of Oakridge Elementary.
Elena, a trusted family friend and the stylist who had done Lily's mother's hair for a decade, paused mid-conversation with a client. Her smile vanished the moment she saw the young girl.
""Oh, sweetheart,"" Elena whispered, setting her styling scissors aside immediately and waving her assistant to take over her chair. She knelt right in front of Lily, her expression a mix of heartbreak and suppressed fury. ""Marcus... what happened to her?""
""Her teacher decided she had too much hair,"" Marcus said, his voice flat and bitter. ""Can you help her?""
Lily hung her head, trying desperately to pull Marcus’s oversized jacket tight around her neck to hide the uneven, mangled fringe. ""It looks ugly. Everyone laughed at me, Elena. She called me a messy rag doll in front of the whole class.""
Elena took Lily’s small hands in hers, squeezing them gently. ""You are beautiful, Lily. You were beautiful ten minutes ago, you’re beautiful now, and nobody's cruel shears can take that away. Come sit in my chair.""
With infinite patience, Elena lifted Lily onto the leather swivel chair, turning it deliberately away from the giant wall mirrors. ""We don't look until the magic is done. Deal?""
Lily managed a tiny, hesitant nod.
Marcus stood by the reception desk, watching in silence as Elena began to carefully wash away the chalk dust, dampening the uneven brown strands. Elena worked with extraordinary gentleness, using tiny, delicate strokes to transform the jagged, violent assault into a chic, intentional pixie cut with soft side-swept bangs that disguised the sheared bald patch near the root.
Outside the salon window, Marcus watched his reflection in the tinted glass. His phone vibrated repeatedly in his pocket: messages from school board representatives, frantic voicemails from Principal Harris, and incoming interview requests from national television networks. He ignored every single one. The world could scream all it wanted; his daughter came first.
Forty-five minutes later, Elena blew the last stray hairs from Lily’s neck with a soft brush and sprayed a light mist of sweet-smelling oil.
""All right, my little warrior,"" Elena said with a triumphant smile. ""Take a look.""
She slowly rotated the chair toward the mirrors.
Lily looked up nervously. The ragged, humiliating damage was gone. In its place was a sharp, modern cut that framed her big hazel eyes and accentuated her delicate features, giving her an air of fierce, mature grace.
Lily touched her brow with trembling fingertips. The fear on her face cracked, replaced by a radiant, tearful smile. ""I... I look like Mom in that old college picture.""
""You look like a hero,"" Marcus said, stepping forward and resting his hand on her shoulder.

Lily turned and threw her arms tightly around his waist. But as Marcus held her, his phone screen lit up on the counter beside them with a breaking news notification:
