Chapter 15 - The Final Bell

The silence that settled over the auxiliary gymnasium was suffocating.
Eleanor Vance sprang from her chair, her mask of victimhood completely shattering into a mask of pure, frantic venom. ""It's a lie! It’s all fabricated! Arthur, tell them! Tell them he forged it!""
Harris couldn't speak. He stood frozen behind the microphone, his chest heaving, sweat pouring down his collar, watching as four plainclothes federal agents in dark windbreakers stepped through the side doors of the gym, handcuffs gleaming at their utility belts.
""Eleanor Vance. Arthur Harris,"" the lead agent announced, stepping onto the stage ramp with cold, federal efficiency. ""We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of federal wire fraud, conspiracy to embezzle federal education subsidies, and civil rights violations under color of authority.""
A thunderous roar of cheers erupted from the bleachers. Parents embraced, students clapped, and news reporters shouted questions, their camera flashes turning the stage into a blinding storm of white light.
Vance attempted to bolt toward the backstage exit, but an agent caught her arm, spinning her around and forcing her wrists behind her back. The sharp click of the handcuffs echoed through the open microphone—a sound of poetic, absolute retribution. As they led her past Marcus, she glared at him with pure hatred, but Marcus didn't even acknowledge her presence. She had already ceased to exist.
Harris offered no resistance. He sank into his chair, covering his face with trembling hands as the second agent secured his wrists.
Marcus stepped away from the dais, descending the stairs into the center floor. The crowd parted respectfully, parents reaching out to pat his shoulder, offering words of admiration and gratitude, but Marcus kept his eyes solely on the little girl waiting in the front row.
Lily stood up. Her oversized gray coat was gone; she wore her neat white dress, her chin held high, the silver locket resting over her heart. For the first time since that terrible morning in Room 204, she wasn't hiding.
Marcus knelt before her, just as he had done on the linoleum floor of that ruined classroom. He gently reached out, smoothing the neat, stylish bangs that framed her smiling face.
""How do you feel, Lily-bug?"" he asked softly.
Lily threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. ""I feel brave, Dad.""

Marcus wrapped his strong arms around her, lifting her up onto his shoulders as the applause inside the auditorium swelled into an overwhelming standing ovation. He turned toward the double doors, walking out of the building into the cool, crisp night air, leaving the corrupt kingdom of Oakridge behind them in ashes.
Above them, the evening sky was clear, vast, and filled with brilliant, unyielding stars."
