Chapter 9 - The Counter-Offensive

The polished conference room of Ross & Associates sat thirty floors above the city, offering an expansive view of the gray autumn skyline. Julian Ross, dressed in a sharp three-piece navy suit, dropped a heavy manila folder onto the center of the glass table with a satisfying thud.
""They're circling the wagons,"" Julian said, loosening his crimson tie. ""Harris and the school board attorney spent the last three hours preparing a defense narrative. They're going to claim Vance suffered an acute stress reaction brought on by student defiance, and that your entrance into the building constituted an aggravated assault.""
Marcus sat across from him, sipping black coffee. Lily was in an adjoining lounge under the watchful care of Julian’s executive assistant, happily drawing pictures with a new set of colored markers.
""She brought charges?"" Marcus asked, his eyebrow arching slightly.
""She filed a formal police complaint for terroristic threatening,"" Julian confirmed with a dark grin. ""She claims you threatened to kill her with classroom scissors in front of minors. Furthermore, the district union representative is attempting to secure a temporary restraining order to bar you from all school property indefinitely.""
Marcus leaned back, cold amusement flickering across his hardened face. ""Good. Let her dig the grave deeper. Have you reviewed the security footage?""
""That’s the catch,"" Julian’s expression turned grim. ""Harris claims the hallway security camera covering Room 204 suffered a routine power failure between 8:30 and 9:15 AM. The school hard drive conveniently shows a twenty-minute gap right when the incident occurred.""
""Of course it does,"" Marcus said coldly. ""What about the girl who took the video?""
""Mia Lawson. Her parents are terrified,"" Julian sighed. ""The district has already threatened Mia with expulsion for violating the zero-tolerance policy on unauthorized electronic recording devices during school hours. Her parents are considering signing a waiver to retract the video from online platforms to protect their daughter’s enrollment.""
Marcus stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. The street below was choked with afternoon traffic. He knew this game. The bureaucracy was designed to outlast individual outrage. They would stall with investigations, issue sterile press releases about 'ongoing personnel matters', wait for the news cycle to shift to another scandal, and quietly reinstate Vance at another campus next semester.
""They think this is about money,"" Marcus murmured, his reflection ghostly against the darkened glass. ""They think every man has a price where his pride gives up.""
""What's your plan, Marcus?"" Julian asked, eyeing his friend carefully. ""Because right now, the police have an open criminal file on your desk-breaking incident. You push too hard in public, and the district attorney might actually feel compelled to issue a misdemeanor warrant to save face.""
Marcus reached into his pocket and placed an old, battered thumb drive onto the glass table.
""Before my wife passed away,"" Marcus said quietly, ""she worked as chief internal auditor for the municipal education budget. She kept backups of five years of irregular capital expenditures authorized by Arthur Harris and the district board.""

Julian's eyes widened. ""Marcus... that's atomic.""
""They wanted to play dirty with my little girl,"" Marcus replied, his voice dead flat. ""Let's burn their house down.""
