Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

The leather interior of Marcus’s sedan smelled of familiar pine air freshener, offering a momentary sanctuary from the chaotic noise of flashing media cameras outside the school gates. Marcus had buckled Lily into the passenger seat, gently pulling the hood of his gray jacket over her head to shield her face from the aggressive telephoto lenses as they had cut through the front drive.
Now, parked two miles away beneath the quiet shade of a park pavilion, Lily sat with a paper cup of warm hot chocolate clasped between both palms, staring down at her lap.
""Julian,"" Marcus said, pressing the phone to his ear while keeping one hand resting reassuringly on Lily’s knee. ""Explain what you mean by 'before'.""
""Five years ago,"" the attorney replied, the rustle of turning documents audible over the line. ""Eleanor Vance taught at Westbridge Academy, an elite private day school in the northern county. She was quietly terminated mid-semester following an 'undisclosed administrative disagreement'. The records were sealed under a mutual non-disclosure agreement.""
Marcus’s knuckles turned white on the steering wheel. ""What was the disagreement, Julian?""
""I just spoke with a former Westbridge board member who hates Vance enough to risk the NDA penalty,"" Julian continued, his voice hardening. ""She clipped the braids off a twelve-year-old autistic boy who wouldn't stop fidgeting with his hair during morning chapel. The parents took a two-hundred-thousand-dollar settlement to keep quiet, and the board allowed Vance to resign with a clean disciplinary record.""
The sheer audacity of the institutional cover-up left Marcus momentarily speechless. Oakridge Elementary hadn't merely hired a strict, idiosyncratic teacher; they had welcomed a documented predator with full knowledge of her predatory history.
""Who approved her transfer?"" Marcus demanded, his voice dropping into that lethal, quiet register.
""That's the worst part,"" Julian said, pausing for dramatic effect. ""Arthur Harris was the vice headmaster at Westbridge during that exact year. When he got the principal job at Oakridge, he brought Vance over with him. They buried the past to protect both their resumes.""
Marcus looked over at Lily. Her eyes were still red-rimmed, her thumb tracing the embossed silver pattern of her mother's recovered locket. A stray tear rolled down her cheek, landing directly on the jagged edge where her brown bangs had once curled neatly over her eyebrows.
""Julian,"" Marcus said softly. ""I don't want a settlement.""
""I know,"" the lawyer responded immediately. ""You want systemic ruin.""
""Get the court injunction ready,"" Marcus said. ""I want their personnel files subpoenaed before the district shreds them. We meet at your downtown office in forty minutes.""
Marcus hung up the phone. He reached across the console, brushing a stray, clipped lock of brown hair off Lily’s shoulder.

""Dad?"" Lily asked, her chin trembling as she looked up into his eyes. ""Can we go home? I never want to see that school again.""
Marcus smiled, a rare, tender warmth softening his rugged features. ""We’re going home, sweetie. But first, we have one important stop to make.""
