Mateo shoved Victoria into the hands of two loyal guards who suddenly rounded the corner. ""Lock her in the cellar. Do not let her speak to anyone,"" he ordered.
Turning back to the bedroom, he grabbed Elena's arm. ""We have to move. Her father's men are already breaching the lower gate.""
Elena rushed to the crib, picking up the frightened, waking infant and wrapping him securely in a wool blanket. ""Where are we going?""
""The house is compromised,"" Mateo said, leading her toward a bookcase at the end of the room. He pressed a hidden catch behind the paneling, and the heavy oak swung open, revealing a stone staircase spiraling down into the darkness. ""There is a private boat dock beneath the cliffs.""

As they descended into the cold subterranean tunnel, the sound of heavy gunfire and explosions resonated from the estate above. Mateo led the way with a tactical flashlight, his weapon drawn.
Behind them, the heavy secret door was suddenly forced open with a resounding bang.
